Coach Ken Humphreys

My name is Kenneth Humphreys and I am the head coach at Notre Dame Academy and also the managing member and head coach of 3 Lions Field Hockey travel team and coaching school.

I have been playing and coaching field hockey for over 25 years and I am a Level I Coach with the English Hockey Association. My coaching has taken place in 3 different countries, has included men and women between the ages of 6 to 54, and has covered every surface from indoor to water based astro turf.

During my field hockey years I have been a captain of a men’s team in England, coach of both men’s and women’s adult teams in England, head coach at Notre Dame Academy for 4 years, and assistant coach for Fauquier High School.

I have also helped coach both indoor and out door field hockey for Mav Sports out of Washington DC. I am looking into obtaining my Level I coaching certificate with U.S Field Hockey as I just registered both myself and the 3 Lions team with them.

I have such a love for the game of field hockey. It is this love that makes me improve not only my own level of play, but also those that I coach. I use a mixture of state of the art sports related drills and some of the old school techniques that have served me so well over time. I try to push all my players to their full potential and only ask for 100% commitment in return.

My goal is not only to make the teams I coach some of the best in the area, but also to give kids the opportunity to learn what I believe is one of the most fun and rewarding sports out there. I have one saying that rings loud in my coaching and that is: “Good Players get beat. Bad Players beat themselves."

Coach Laura Nugent

Laura is a 2008 graduate of Washington and Lee University, where she played defense for the Generals, a Division III ODAC Conference team. When she was a freshman, the relatively young team placed in the top 3 in the conference and went on to win the conference during her sophomore season. She played on the conference-ranked defense.

After graduation, Laura coached Central Tree Middle School in Rutland, Massachusetts to their program's first-ever wins.

Laura began playing hockey in seventh grade at North Allegheny school district north of Pittsburgh. Throughout middle and high school, she participated in numerous camps, including Penn State, Kent State, Eastern field hockey camps, and Gateway field hockey camps. She was selected to play for Gateway's U16 Midwest team to compete at the National Field Hockey Festival. As a forward and midfielder on the North Allegheny Tigers, she was part of an undefeated program.
